All great vacations have a starting place, and for a Disney Cruise Vacation, that starting place is the magnificent Disney Cruise Terminal at Port Canaveral. While there are certainly nice – and not so nice – cruise terminals around the world, the Disney Cruise Terminal is like none other, especially since it was designed exclusively for use by the Disney Cruise Line. Be sure to take a look around while you are there – the tile mural depicting the cruise routes through the Caribbean is something that you don’t want to miss. Keep your cameras handy as well, because you never know if any Disney characters will come strolling by, welcoming guests aboard the Disney Wonder and Disney Magic.
Parking is available at the cruise terminal – be sure to follow the directives of the signs and guides, so that you can drop off your luggage – and passengers – clode to the cruise terminal before parking your vehicle.
If you arrive early for your Walt Disney Cruise Vacation – or plan to stay later – there are several places to spend some time in the area. These include:
• The Kennedy Space Center – just about a 20 minute drive from the cruise terminal. You’ll probably need several hours to fully enjoy the Space Center, but for a more limited visit, consider a visit to the Astronaut Hall of Fame, located at the entrance to the Kennedy Space Center.
• Cocoa Beach – famous for sun and surf, it is just a 10 minute drive from the cruise terminal. There are bath houses with showers at several locations next to Cocoa Beach for your convenience.
On all 3 and 4 night cruises on the Disney Wonder, a stop at Nassau is a close as one can get to a ‘foreign port’.
Nassau is located on New Providence Island in the Bahamas, and it is the capital of the Bahamas. Whether you are a history buff or a beach bum, you are sure to enjoy your stay in Nassau. The Disney Wonder docks in Nassau in the morning, and you will have a nice long time from 9:30AM-7:00PM to enjoy your stay. Ships are able to sail right up to the dock, so you won’t have to struggle with an extra tender ashore. You are just steps from “Festival Place”, the tourism center of Nassau, where you can arrange for tours or taxis if you need them, or shop for souveniers right there in the building.
From shopping to swimming, you’ll find plenty to do during your stay in Nassau. Some things worth considering:
• shopping along Bay Street
• swimming with the dolphins (or sea lion encounter)
• snorkle or scuba trips
• walking tour of historic Nassau
• tour of the amazing aquariums and grounds at Atlantis
Whatever you decide to do, you are sure to enjoy your day in Nassau.
All Disney Cruise itineraries include a stop at Disney’s own private island – Castaway Cay – and once you’ve experienced it, you’ll be glad that you didn’t miss out on all the fun.
Many cruiselines have their own ‘private’ island – a place where cruise guests can enjoy the sun and the sand, relaxing and watersports without any ‘hassels’, long trips from the pier, or high port charges to the cruise line. Disney’s private island is different from any other cruise line’s in that the natural harbor has been dug out (costing millions of dollars!) so that the Disney Cruise Ships could dock directly on the island, without the guests needing to ‘tender’ in on smaller boats to shore.
From the moment you step off the Disney Wonder or the Disney Magic, you will be in the ultimate island paradise, where the good folks at Disney have planned for everything, from a big BBQ spread for lunch to every imaginable beach activity.
For kids, there are plenty of things do do, whether they wish to enjoy the special planned – and supervised – activities in the kids only area, including digging up Montro the Whale’s bones or joining in races, treasure hunts and sports (while their grown-ups have a chance to sit back and relax on the beach). There’s a teen-only beach with plenty to do, and even an adults-only beach located on the far side of the island, away from all the beach actvity.
Whether you like to sun or snorkle, swim or sail, you will certainly enjoy your day at Castaway Cay!
